No updates within 5 weeks?

Postby simplex on Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:45 am

Hello,

I have installed LMDE 5 weeks ago or so, and I wonder that I have not received any update of any package in this time. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Greetings,
s.

That's normal; you get updates in one go when a new update pack is released. For more background; see the LMDE FAQ: viewtopic.php?f=197&t=91405.

After the installation, did you upgraded your system ?

If not, you installed LMDE + UP4. Check your sources.list file, you're likely missing 2 UP.
If you did an upgrade, then it's fine !
Linux Mint 10 was the best !
Currently using LMDE64 & Cinnamon. Working well ! Thanks !

No, the problem was a complete different one. As zerozero pointed out in

viewtopic.php?f=217&t=120139#p669483

I did not install LMDE, I installed Linux Mint Julia. This must have happened by a mistake of Yumi/Penndrive. I have no other explanation. I thoght, I had LMDE, but I hadn't!

Today, I installed the real LMDE and I get more then 1200 updates at once. :D

Still there is a little problem. The update manager says that some repositories are not online any more or currently not available. :?:

OK, here it is. But i must warn you:

1) The output is mainly in German.
2) Today seems a bad day for updates. Some of the servers seem to be down. I noticed this 2h ago, when I tried to update my "normal" Linux Mint 13. Everything concerning "Translation" is not working properly, see below. ("Fehl" = pseudo-German for "fail" :) )

PS: Don't you think that the commands you gave me have to be listed in the installation instruction for LMDE? A dist-upgrade should be performed after installation??? Really?

You can produce the output in English easily. Run the commands as such:
Code: Select all
LANG=C apt update
LANG=C apt dist-upgrade

I still got problems with updating my system. There is something wrong with the language translation packages. The same problem arises not only in LMDE, but also in my installation of "Normal" Linux Mint 13. What am I doing wrong?

Code: Select all
root@nc10:~# LANG=C apt-get update

BTW, what is this strange bash syntax

Code: Select all
# LANG=C apt-get update

First an assignment and then a command? After 25 years of Unix have I overlooked something in basic shell syntax?

Error: Translation-en

Yep ignore those as also get them on Mint 14 cinnamon. And somebody mentioned it was some kind of mis-configuration? or bug?

Tho would like to disable them as get about a dozen of those every time I update.
But appears there is no way to disable them?
And adds another min. or two to the update process.

I followed zerozero's advice and executed

# mint-choose-debian-mirror

as described on viewtopic.php?f=185&t=112047
I selected the (currently) fastest server (somewhere in Italy, I dwell in Germany) and wooosh - I got an update without error messages.

Yes, you can can prefix a command with a parameter assignment which will affect the environment for that command only. http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual ... nvironment

Had you overlooked it? I don't think so, I'd call the above an obfuscated manual... I've seen it used a few times, and it stuck somewhere in my mind and I managed to recall it now :lol:

Thank you, xenopeek. This reminds me of my French course in school: "On n'a jamais fini d'apprendre" ("One has never stopped learning").

And yes, it's an obfuscated manual. I was able to find the LANG-variable on http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual ... -Variables, but I did not find where the value "C" comes from and why it stands for the English language or for the locale (which would be German in my case):

LANG
Used to determine the locale category for any category not specifically selected with a variable starting with LC_.

Defined in the GNU C Library: http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual ... rd-Locales. The "C" locale is the default locale for programs, meaning English. If you have set a different locale (which most users will), that will be used by any program that has support for that language. With this prefix you force it back to the program's default.

And from another entry here, http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual ... Categories, I think it should instead be:
Code: Select all
LC_ALL=C
