Help! Evolution crashes just after starting up!

Postby dclement on Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:01 am

Hello,

I am in serious trouble: seconds after starting evolution, it disappears! Below is an output of the terminal.

I have a one-day-old backup of ~/.evolution, but, to my very bad surprise, restoring it didn't help!

Then I noticed that I had evolution data in several places:

~/.local/share/evolution
~/.cache/evolution
~/.config/evolution

I hope the right data is in one of them, but how do I get back Evolution running?

Thanks a lot for your help - Daniel

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Please share the output of the following command run on the terminal:
Code: Select all
ls -l /home/daniel/.evolution/cache/ /home/daniel/.cache/evolution/

I wouldn't touch the folders you mention except the apparent problematic ~/.evolution/cache/ or ~/.cache/evolution.

Hi, thanks for your support! Here it is:

ls -l /home/daniel/.cache/evolution
total 4
drwx------ 4 daniel daniel 4096 avril 28 16:33 calendar

ls -l /home/daniel/.evolution/cache
total 16
drwx------ 6 daniel daniel 4096 oct. 16 2011 addressbook
drwx------ 10 daniel daniel 4096 avril 25 09:43 calendar
drwx------ 66 daniel daniel 4096 mai 5 2009 http
drwxr-xr-x 2 daniel daniel 4096 avril 24 14:57 tmp

I'm not touching any of these folders.

Note that most of the data has to be in /daniel/.local/share/evolution which is 1.9Gb in size; the others are much smaller.

Also, I manage to start evolution offline. I get many error messages like this:

(evolution:2994): libebook-CRITICAL **: e_contact_get: assertion `contact && E_IS_CONTACT (contact)' failed

(evolution:2994): e-data-server-ui-CRITICAL **: e_contact_store_get_contact: assertion `ITER_IS_VALID (contact_store, iter)' failed

But, alas, as soon as I try to go online, Evolution crashes with segmentation fault :-(

From Googling on "Migrating cached data mv .evolution/cache/http .cache/evolution/http", this seems to be a frequent issue recently. No solutions that I found, except from back in 2010 when upgrading from Evolution 2.30 to 2.32, but I think that isn't applying to your problem.

Perhaps try the following, to move both caches out of the way and see if Evolution will at least start again then.
Code: Select all
mv ~/.cache/evolution ~/.cache/evolution.old
mv ~/.evolution/cache ~/.evolution/cache.old

If it doesn't work, you can easily move the caches back.

Unfortunately, I had already tried something like that and it didn't work.

I googled as you said, and I find it really worrying that Evolution 2.32 be so unreliable. Moreover, my Evolution data which was ~650Mb in size under Evo 2.28 is becoming 1.9Gb under Evo 2.32!

For now I'm going back to my previous setup (Ubuntu Lucid) -- I was more or less able to retrieve the missing mails (since Evolution starts offline), and put them back into the older system.

As for mail software, I don't feel like I can trust Evolution 2.32 after all these woes. I'm going to search for other options
- either a way of locking Evolution to 2.28 or 2.30 (I'm told the new database format came with 2.32);
- or another more robust mail software.

Of course I'm not blaming Linux Mint at all for this, I'm continuing my tests. I'll surely have more questions soon!
