Nvidia xconfig error

I installed LMDE last night and this is my first experience with debian. Anyway, when I attempt to run 'nvidia-xconfig' I get this output:


WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.

New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'


I do not know if it has anything to do with it but I used smxi and got an error message afterward that read:


"NO BUILT MODULE NAME" and another followed that of "bad conf file."

Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance
