gedit locks system with .xsessions-error file

Postby Myself on Fri May 11, 2012 4:19 am

I opened a .xsesssion-errors file which admittedly was 1.07Gb, only after a few days of use!!!, and whole system came to a crawl. Tried to copy some of the file so as to post it here but just total lock-up. Before lock-up I saw in Task Manager that CPUs were being used 100%, 4Gb of RAM @ 97% and 2Gb swap used. That is nearly 6Gb of memory space for a 1.07Gb file!!! As I cannot read the ,xsessions-errors file I deleted it but only have recovered 100Kb of disk spsace!!!???

You need to read this thread here:

Post #11 looks like the best solution to me (although there are others) and post #12 is worth a look as well with reference to your reclaimed disk space.

Thanks viking777. This error reporting file size is worse than anything I ever experienced with any version of old Windoz, even server versions.

I know what you mean and I must admit the guy who was terribly proud of his 4.6 Terabyte error file did make me smile a bit! The difference is though that here you got a very easy answer that will continue to work for you (and apparently has been implemented by default in future Ubuntu versions). I doubt the solution would have been that easy or quick in the Windows world.

Oh Dear!!! Windows can sometimes take years to fix! Did Microsoft ever fully fix the problem with memory leakage?
