What app for splitting MP3 files?

Postby squeezy on Tue May 22, 2012 1:12 pm

What are some good apps to look at for splitting large MP3 files? I'd prefer a GUI. I used to use a neat little utility in Windows that let you load the file then just click on the spots where you wanted to break the file and it would save the different segments into new files. No decoding involved. Anything similar to that?

Thanks!

Found just what I was looking for, mp3splt-gtk. I posted and googled at the same time :D

Anyway, this program is exactly what I had in mind. Of course, other suggestions are always welcomed!

Audacity.

there's a version for Windows as well, these days -- so you can use the same exact program with the same exact interface for this (and many, many other) task(s) dealing with audio files of any type (including, but not limited to, mp3 files) on Windows and Linux.
need I say more??

Thanks, Brian. I actually have Audacity installed but have been using it only for recording and mixing tracks together. I'll have to look at how to split a file with it.

Audacity is as good a way as any

Add a label track
Select a break point
Add a label (ctrl-b is the shortcut) Useful to give a final name at this point, saves renaming later on.
Open up the 'export multiple' dialog and play around with the settings

Thanks much, Rich! A picture is worth a 1000 words and that one is a mini-tutorial in itself :D
