E-mail notifier for READ messages in an IMAP inbox

I am not sure whether this is the right forum to ask the following question, but since I use LMDE here it is: Is there any IMAP mail notifier compatible with LMDE/Xfce capable of notifying of read messages?

A bit strange a request, I know, but hear me out: in my Gmail inbox all new messages recently started to appear as read. I am certain my account has not been hacked and I use only the webmail interface (no message filters are defined there) + a Gmail Atom feed notifier (CheckGmail), hence this must be caused by a bug in Gmail. Since I am an Inbox Zero (http://inboxzero.com/) person, any message that is in inbox is new anyway, thus notifying of read e-mails makes perfect sense.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.
