Screen Freezes, possible fglrx-driver issue

Postby Lord Aro on Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:37 pm

Hi,

sometimes, when i run a relatively highly powered program, e.g. WINE, or AssaultCube Reloaded, i get screen freezes which cannot be gotten out of, except with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Sometimes, even that isn't enough to reset it and i have to completely reboot (e.g. java games like minecraft just black screen on start up, and have to be killed with 'kill -9 <pid>'
However, browsers work fine, playing video with multiple tabs open with no problems

I've had a look at the logs (kern.log, dmesg) but found nothing conclusive

this is a debian kernel and i think the cinnamon freezes reported in the topic you linked above have nothing to do with this problem.

@zerozero - please tell me how to determine that. I also run Debian. Is it the absence of Ubuntu in the description?

kyphi,
the naming (assuming we are running vanilla kernels) follows different standards
from mint maya 13
Code: Select all
zerozero@zerozero-Inspiron-1545 ~ $ inxi -S
System:    Host: zerozero-Inspiron-1545 Kernel: 3.2.0-26-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: KDE 4.8.4 Distro: Linux Mint 13 Maya

Code: Select all
zerozero@zerozero-Inspiron-1545 ~ $ uname -a
Linux zerozero-Inspiron-1545 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

from lmde
Code: Select all
zerozero@deb-kde ~ $ inxi -S
System:    Host: deb-kde Kernel: 3.2.0-3-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: KDE 4.8.4 Distro: Linux Mint Debian Edition

Code: Select all
zerozero@deb-kde ~ $ uname -a

Thank you zerozero for your long reply.

I can see that I strayed into the LMDE Board Index.

After using "uname -a" in a number of distros, it is as I thought: the absence of a mention of "Ubuntu" could denote a Debian kernel depending on which distro you open.
The output of "inxi -S" is far more comprehensive than "uname -a" and indeed states the distribution but this information was not supplied by the OP.

The current LinuxMint Debian Edition offers a choice of MATE or Cinnamon and the freezing issue was a Cinnamon issue.

If a moderator would like to delete the entries following the OP's posting please do so. The OP might then get an answer to his/her posted problem.
