VirtualBox, import existing WinXP partition?

My oldest partition is on WinXP, I shrank it as much as I could, but I would like to delete it and free up space.
The problem is, I have some valuable projects there, which require XP to work properly.
Can I make the file from the whole partition with the existing XP, than import it into VirtualBox or some other software and continue to use that OS fully functional in a virtual machine?
I heard that one of VMware modules has that kind of possibility.
Can it be done with Linux?
I know that I can install XP from scratch in VB and then transfer projects there, but it's the last option...

it is possible, but the process looks very complicated

You're right, it is :? .
Plus... it assumes I have to make the image of the whole drive, not just the XP's partition. But that drive is already multiboot, therefore it surely complicates even more, plus it will enlarge the vdi image. A lot!
