Trying to build benzene which is apparently not maintained

Benzene is a gui and some game engines for playing the board game Hex. Hex was invented in 1942 by the mathematician Piet Hein, and again around 1949 by John Nash, who was portrayed in the movie "A Beautiful Mind." Nowadays the game has a cult following on the Internet. The engine Mohex, which comes with Benzene, is far and away the strongest Hex engine known to the public. It uses Monte Carlo simulation methods, and is much stronger than its predecessors Hexy or Six. Unfortunately, the project seems to be in limbo now. I was able to build it on my old machine which uses Debian, and I recall I had to jump through some hoops. For starters, it uses packages from the "fuego" project which is a GUI for Go, but you have to use an older version of fuego using the svn co -r command. Then you may need to have an older version of autoconf installed. I thought I had retraced my steps for LMDE, but still I get an error when I run make. Details are available in this thread. My earlier posts are as user hextwixt, and my latest post is as twixtfanatic.
What I'm trying to do is interest someone here in this software for its own sake. Maybe the Linux Mint forums aren't the ideal place to do this. BUT if someone does take an interest, and would like to help me to get it to work on my machine, I would be very grateful. I could try to provide any details you want. TIA
