I was prompted to upgrade mainly because Thunderbird constantly keeps asking me whether I want to upgrade it, but it never works if I just click on the link. I normally wait until it gets upgraded in the next distribution.
However, I thought I would investigate Firefox18 just to see if a manual installation would work before I tried Thunderbird. My email is more important to me than a browser!

So I followed the on-line instructions which worked fine, BUT if you do the same as I did, watch out for the bit where they tell you to remove the old installation!! I did, which is OK unless you close the browser you're working from, ( which I did by mistake) and then hey presto, you have no browser, no on-line guide, no nothing! Fortunately I used my Android to quickly browse to the same page and I followed the rest of the instructions and everything is now fine!

Just thought it might be a useful cautionary tale for those users who like myself are not that familiar with new installations etc.

The safest way of updating Thunderbird, Firefox and any other software is by using mintUpdate, Synaptic or Software Center. All 3 use the Mint/Ubuntu repositories in order to download available software.
No fiddling around yourself is required. And chances of loosing any software completely are next to nothing.

Very wise advice. I was unable to get Adobe Flashplayer to work so I had to re-install Firefox 17 and that sorted it!

The current Adobe Flash plugin is adobe-flashplugin 11.2.202.261. This plugin works fine on my systems on Mint 13 Firefox 18.0.2 as well as on as well Mint 14 Firefox 18.0.2.

In order to get it once upon a time I used Synaptic Package Manager, which comes pre-installed on Mint, and selected to install the software package adobe-flashplugin 11.2.202.261.
Depending on your desktop environment you may have to select adobe-flash-properties-gtk 11.2.202.261 or adobe-flash-properties-kde 11.2.202.261 as well.
On a standard Mint installation, selecting adobe-flashplugin 11.2.202.261 will automatically uninstall mint-flashplugin-11 and replace it by adobe-flashplugin 11.2.202.261. This is all right because mint-flash-plugin-11 is a few versions older than adobe-flashplugin 11.2.202.261.

Before starting to change the Adobe plugin, make sure you close all browser instances.
