Software Manager hangs on Gnu Octave 3.2

Postby dhfx on Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:05 am

I'm trying to install Gnu Octave (the Matlab almost-clone). When I search in Software Manager, Octave3.2 comes up along with all the add-on packages, but when I double-click on the Octave3.2 item in the list, SM hangs. What's going on? I tried a few different repositories along with the main package repository, with same result.

Is there another way to get an Octave 3.x package? I don't want to build from source if I can possibly avoid it, to say nothing of getting all the external dependencies.

You can try to install it from Synaptic Package Manager. The dependencies will be installed automatically, however perhaps you should try this first:

Code: Select all
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -fv
sudo apt-get update

Then try to install octave from the software manager afterwards.

I had fun once. It was awful.

Did the apt-get update, then tried Software Manager again. It shows octave3.2 at the top of the search results, but this is deceptive; SM still hangs, so I went to Synaptic. SPM correctly shows Octave 3.6.2-5 as the top level, with Octave 3.2 as a dependency. Tried installing 3.6.2 and it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion. - dhfx
