Solved LMDE and Spotify (not playing local files)

Hi, its been quite a while since i was on the forum and that is to the credit of Linux Mint as i have had no problems at all until now. I am wondering if anyone here can help or point me in the direction of finding a solution to a problem i have with LMDE and Spotify. I have searched but found nothing that exactly relates to my problem.

I have a Dell Studio Laptop Pentium Dual Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz

I have 2 installs one is Linux Mint 15RC (x86-64) and the other is LMDE 201303 (x86-64) on both installs the version of Spotify is the same 0.9.0.133.gd18ed589

I also have a partition which i store all my music etc on and both installs see this partition and have full access to it.

On Linux Mint 15RC Spotify works flawlessly with no problems at all

On LMDE Spotify plays radio etc with no problems but when it comes to playing local files it will not play them at all.

I started a local track from the terminal and the output from that is below, Spotify loaded but did not play the track.

Still having no luck getting local files to play on Spotify, i have spent a lot of time searching threads here, on Debian forums and also on the Spotify forum.

Spotify released an update for Linux yesterday ( 0.9.1.55 ) and i updated both Linux Mint Olivia (cinnamon) and LMDE.

Again Spotify works flawlessly on Linux Mint Olivia but still does not play local files in LMDE.

Would this have something to do with the codecs in LMDE?

Do you think waiting for the next update pack for LMDE will help?

Have a look if ffmpeg is installed on that box, if not install it and try again.

I am using arch and came across a different issue but stumbled on your post. In Arch to play local files ffmpeg-spotify is required (arch-specific package as far as I understand), so maybe just standard ffmpeg in your case. Have a go at that so.

ffmpeg was not installed so i installed it and libavdevice54, libavfilter3, libswresample0 came with it.

Sorry to report that this did not help. Tried rebooting, also tried uninstalling and reinstalling spotify but sadly this made no difference and local files still do not play using LMDE.

Think i will just wait and see what the next update pack brings to it and for now use Mint (olivia) when i wish to use spotify.

I read from [url=http://www.webupd8.org/2011/12/how-to-install-native-spotify-linux.html]webupd8.org[/url] , you need libavutil50, libavcodec52 and libavformat52 package . I don't familiar with LMDE repository , but all of that package available in debian Sid ( unstable ) . I don't know if it will work in LMDE. Check dependency files within your repo.

Thanks for the response mank_in however i had come across that article whilst searching for a fix and did in fact install those 3 packages but it made no difference and spotify refuses to play local files. Very strange

Try open Spotify in terminal as root. Sometime software refuse to work properly without root account .
And you can see the error message in terminal too .

As i stated in an earlier post spotify running on LMDE plays the radio fine but will not play my local files.

Using spotify on Mint Olivia it plays my local files just fine.

I have now marked this thread as solved, however i cannot post on how it was solved, only guessing really.

This morning i thought i would try running spotify again and this time it began playing my local files. I was surprised as nothing i thought had changed over the last few days.

This is where the guessing comes in, looking at spotify and my local file list there are around 6 tracks that are marked as cannot play but all the rest are working fine. Maybe there was a syncing problem with my music list and spotify. Not really sure but glad its working again.
