howto install ceni on lmde 201403

Post by jonnyog »

Hi,
just installed lmde after a year with regular mint - mainly in hope of being able to install ceni - the only network tool i've found that can connect to vodafone mobile wirelass modem via usb cable - the vodafone docs say its not possible to do this via linux but I installed antix on a 15 year old laptop and the pre-installed ceni picked up the device and connected with default settings straight away. since then I have been trying fruitlessly to install ceni onto my regular machine but without any success - there are plenty of forum discussions around about this but most quickly descend into a comparison between ceni and wicd or some other off the point discussion, so

can anyone explain in simple terms how to install ceni onto linux mint lmde 201403?

i'm sure it involves adding lines to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/... for the correct repository but there are also dependencies involved and it has so far proved fruitless by me

thank you in advance for your hard work...

Ceni ... is for Debian unstable repros.

LMDE is set to "testing" repros

You must, set the debian-unstable repros to, then can install Ceni.

thanks,
so currently the official-package-repositories.list looks like this

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://extra.linuxmint.com debian main

what would it look like with the unstable repos enabled?
this maybe?

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://extra.linuxmint.com debian main
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ unstable main

[part-solved] Re: howto install ceni on lmde 201403

i found thius link to ceni package
http://mirror.lug.udel.edu/pub/siductio ... in/c/ceni/
downloaded the .deb file and opened with gdebi
clicked install and all dependencies were met and package installed correctly

I then connected my vodafone mobile broadband usb adaptor, switched it on a ran sudo ceni in terminal
ceni asks to disable network manager, which i did, it then lists the available hardware interfaces
however unlike ceni on antix ceni on lmde does not recognise the vodafone mobile broadband usb adaptor

so the question now is this...
what is the difference between antix and lmde that allows ceni on antix to recognise the vodafone adaptor while ceni on lmde to not recognise it?

both are based on debian testing...

in conclusion, thereis no point installing ceni on lmde for the following reasons

1) it won't recognise the hardware interface to the vodafone broadband usb adaptor
2) more tweaking of the system might allow it to recognise the adaptor but the lielihood is that that same tweaking will allow the regular network manager also to recognise the adaptor
3) ceni screws up network manager on lmde

time for a new thread - how to get lmde->network manager to recognise vodafone usb broadband adaptor as is the case with antix->ceni
