I use the LXDE desktop on LMDE 201403 (Cinnamon Ed.).

The Synaptic Package Manager is in menu->preferences but it appears to not start from the menu; when I start it in Terminal (lmde1 alan # synaptic) it runs in GUI mode but generates these errors and warnings to the Terminal session.

Do these errors and warnings indicate a condition that requires fixing, or are they only a result of starting synaptic in Terminal, thus something I can safely ignore?

Also, Mint's Package Manager offers an 'uninstall' of Cinnamon; I'd like to uninstall Cinnamon as I've come to prefer LXDE and, as things are now, shutting my system down with Cinnamon installed requires me first to 'logout' of LXDE then to 'shutdown' at the Cinnamon login prompt (LXDE's 'Shutdown' option does nothing; I presume this is due to Cinnamon's involvement).

Can I uninstall Cinnamon via the Package Manager without causing problems to either my instance of LXDE or LMDE itself?

Can you please post the output of and Normally you can remove Cinnamon/Nemo and all the gnome stuff as long as you have the equivalent in LXDE. But I would be careful not to remove too much things at once. Do it slowly so that you can see if something breaks somewhere.

Or better, start with Debian LXDE and add the Mint repos

Normally you can remove Cinnamon/Nemo and all the gnome stuff as long as you have the equivalent in LXDE. But I would be careful not to remove too much things at once. Do it slowly so that you can see if something breaks somewhere.

Strange! This bug was fixed in version 0.80.3

Anyway, you can safely ignore them and use synaptic from terminal. But still it's strange you can't use the GUI :S

ER... How does one remove Cinnamon and Nemo, piece by piece? First Nemo then Cinnamon? Are their sub-sections of Cinnamon?

F'raid I have to ask "How does one do that?" also. Will doing so remove Mint's Package Manager? (I've come to like that gizmo)

Removing Cinnamon will remove a lot of stuff like muffin nemo, cinnamon-control-center...

After that try if your system is still working. If so, you can probably remove a few other gnome packages that you don't use anymore. Trust your instinct on this one. But be warned: you could break a lot of things

What I was suggesting is: Install Debian with LXDE. Fresh install. And add Mint repos. Then install all the tool you want from Mint. In my opinion it would be cleaner. Harder but much cleaner

You will not have all the Gnome/Cinnamon stuff in your system.

Yesterday me & Clem had found out that an outdated adjustment in mintsystem was overwriting Synaptic's UI file with an old version of it, making Synaptic spit these warnings again - even though the bug has been already fixed and Synaptic's version is recent enough.
It was the cause of Synaptic's lockups in Mint 17. Clem pushed an updated mintsystem there, and the lockups stopped.

As for LMDE, it's not so critical here. The lockups in Ubuntu-based Mint versions were due to this bug which is not present in Debian: gksu doesn't buffer the stderr output here, it spits it right away, and so the lockup never happens.
