Chromium 6

hi guys.i have a problem.is there a way to install chromium 6 in lmde?

I installed 7.0.517.0 dev from the google chrome website. I downloaded the 32 bit deb and installed w/ gdebi. Seems to be working well, posting from it now :)

Thanks for the information on gdebi. That's quite handy!

I searched for Google Chrome Beta and could only find version 6.0.472.55. Am I not downloading from the correct place?

When I installed gdebi gave this message:
Error: Breaks existing package 'google-chrome-stable' that conflict: 'google-chrome'. But the '/home/user/Downloads/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb' provides it via: 'google-chrome'
Is there any way to fix this?.. Error notice aside, it seems to be working fine.

I'm using the Chromium stable ppa (always kept in sync with the stable chrome version, currently v6) at

I switched to the Iron browser which currently is running 5.0.381 with ver 6 coming out next week.
Its a nice fast browser w/o the spyware

After you unzip the .gz file, you can just create a shortcut to your desktop and run the browser

I installed gdebi using synaptic.

I just used synaptic to fully remove chrome and install the new version (thanks for the link omns) and upon reinstalling with gdebi the same error came up:

"Error: Breaks existing package 'google-chrome-stable' that conflict: 'google-chrome'. But the '/home/user/Downloads/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb' provides it via: 'google-chrome'"

Only this time I cannot find where chrome installed... I then did a complete removal with synaptic and reinstalled. Same results.

If you want to use the recent Chromium 7 dev builds in Debian, you can use the following repository:

In a terminal enter sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and add

deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main non-free contrib

After running apt-get update
enter apt-get install frickelplatz-archive-keyring frickelplatz-keyring frickelplatz-keyrings

I've been using the Chromium dev builds for the last few months, and I have found them to be very stable.

When I did this firefox somehow disappeared. :shock I looked in synaptic and it showed as not installed. That's okay though, I just reinstalled it and it's fine.

* Edit: Chromium 7.0.516.0 is now installed and working great! :D

I'm very sorry to ask, but I've bumped into a site that explained the differences between chrome and chromium and I'd rather install chromium now.

Chromium is not in the software manager or synaptic. How can I download it?

Chromium is no longer included in the Debain testing repositories, and it is not included in the Mint repository either. The debs that can be downloaded from http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involve ... #TOC-Linux are only for Chrome, not Chromium builds. Thus, you could either compile Chromium from source, or use the much easier options of adding the frickelplatz repository. Follow the instructions I provided above to enable that repository and install Chromium.

In that case I think I'll keep chrome on for now until the rep's are available in LMDE.

Yes it is. I just installed it. Just try Synaptic or Software manager, but is version 5.0.375.127~r55887-1

Change the repository from testing to sid, install chromium and change the repository back to testing. The easiest way.

on line 2:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
replace "testing" with "sid"
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian sid main contrib non-free
Ctrl+o , enter, Crtl+x

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser
do the opposite to replace "sid" with "testing"
update and you're off..

A suggestion, maybe Chromium "Stable" (v6) could be added to the LMDE repositories ? Doesn't look like it's going to be back in Debian Testing any time soon, but it's a very popular browser and its release cycle fits very well with a rolling release distribution like LMDE !!
