does F spot serve any purpose? never liked the program... its easier to use folders.....

As a full page viewer and a slide show it is ideal, especially if you are using your own digital camera. For pictures off the Internet, not so much. I keep it on hand.

IIRC, F-Spot was orginally intended to replace the Gimp in Ubuntu 10.04. I read from somewhere (probably at some blog, if not the Ubuntu Forum) about the Gimp being "too advanced" for casual users who need to do basic editing, so they axed the Gimp in favor of F-Spot. Ubuntu added some other stuff as well (Gwibber, PiTiVi, among others) to pick up the slack space left by the Gimp. And Mint being an Ubuntu derivative, picked up F-Spot as well. Fortunately for us, the Gimp was retained in lieu of PiTiVi.

I didn't like F-Spot either, since its interface is quite cumbersome and the editing features were a tad too basic. It only gets in my way when I edit photos.

Have a look at gthumb in its latest versions, eg 2.11.6. It is becoming better and better, and I like you, also prefer to use folders for my photos; it is so much faster to find things simply from nautilus using that system, rather than starting f-spot and then searching tags. Previous versions of f-spot used to have an organise by folder option, but that has now disappeared.

Me too, working with folders. I ve tried some image viewers and right now i use gthumb and shotwell. I find shotwell more easy to navigate but gthumb gives you more information about each shot, something important to me.
But i think i ll give mirage a try too (following petohl's suggestion)

F-spot is the default image viewer with my LMDE - installed on my AAO netbook.

With my Debian Sid on my main PC, I use Viewnoir - works well for my needs.

There are a number of image-viewers made for Linux.
The 'right one' depends on what you want and expect from the Application? Linux and Open Source are all about 'choices'

I would cruise through the Synaptic Package Manager to see what the preferred selection of 'image viewers' is in the repositories first.
Most of the good/popular Apps are in the repros already. Before I went and downloaded a 3rd party App. - just to get the latest cutting-edge version number of the App.
The Apps. in the repros have been tried and tested, by people who know these things. A newer version or decimal point number of a higher version - you never know what your getting.
I always wait for the newer version of an App to make it into the Debian repositories first. Then, I know it'll work.

Its great for use with digital cameras as a sort of virtual photo album. Gimp is an editor, they are not really competition.
