VLC Video Problems with WinTV HVR-1600

Postby jdrichardson on Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:21 pm

I've just installed LMDE (201109) and am experiencing video problems with
VLC. I use VLC in PVR mode to view cable TV. With this edition of LMDE I
get no video at all. I've had intermittent sound problems before but never
with video. I'm using an AMD64 CPU, Nvidia GE6150 video card, and a
Hauppage HVR-1600 tv card. The TV card uses the cx18 driver, and I have loaded firmware for it.

I know VLC was broke for awhile a few months back on LMDE- is it broke
again?

I've run this successfully on many other Linux distributions so I'm
somewhat mystified. I would appreciate any help or clarification regarding
this matter.

Problem solved!

VLC was indeed broken on my LMDE 201109 installation. So I removed it, and installed LMDE 201012. Somewhere I read that to keep things stable one should use the Squeeze source list instead of testing *duh!). I changed my LMDE 201012 source.list file to reflect that, and then updated my installation to its current state. VLC now works fine.

There were some side effects:
- OpenOffice is used instead of LibreOffice (no biggie for me)
- Firefox would not run. To fix that I installed iceweasel (an unbranded firefox) which works fine.

Hope this helps someone who has the same problem I did.
