I'm running LMDE tracking latest. Like a fool I thought the other day, "I think I'll try KDE out." Well, I installed kde-full, and after much work got sound back to working and decent looking gtk apps in KDE (hint: lxappearance and gtk-oxygen packages are your friend...or names similar to those). But now I'm struggling with a different problem.

I got a message from the update manager today that I need to update a few packages: libxine1-bin, libxine1-consol, libxine1-ffmpeg, libxine1-x. However, when I go to update this xine stuff it says it will remove dragonplayer, kde-full, kde-standard, and kdemultimedia. Looking at dragonplayer it seems like it's a video player (duh) but it's a Qt front-end wrapped around xine? So I'm guessing what's going on is that it depends on a different version of xine than this update will provide, and since it's a dependency of kde-full, kde-standard, kde-multimedia those will be removed as well. Any ideas on what I should do? Is that bug report worthy? Am I absolutely nuts to use KDE with LMDE?

I like gnome and hated early versions of KDE 4, but I hear they worked out a lot of the kinks. I was hoping to avoid the whole gnome 2/3 transition mess, as well as the lack of features for early versions of gnome 3. But maybe going to KDE under LMDE is just asking for it.

your first and more logical option is to hold the update until the libxine* "mess" gets sorted out, you don't have to update every day, if you see that the "waters are not good" don't dive into it

and don't worry with your DE choice, KDE is awesome, LMDE is even going to have a KDE respin

Cool, thanks for the input. I just didn't know if the xine "mess" was going to get sorted out eventually or if that's just the way things were going to be and I had to do a workaround somehow.

I ran into the same thing. I let it remove the files it said it was going to remove, including kde-standard (I installed standard, not full). It did NOT wipe out my KDE desktop environment. I think all it was doing was removing the meta-package which in itself contains nothing. It did however, remove VLC. I reinstalled VLC with no problems and it is working fine.

second that! only "discovered" (as in starting to use KDE properly) this year. Still running gnome on my second computer because i'm curious about the development but KDE has become my fav DE by now. Moved from PCLinuxOS to Linux Mint 10 KDE (which, for me, was a mess tbh, so many problems - others may have had more luck) and now with Debian Testing KDE i found a new home.

When thinking about all the comments i read on KDE (resource hog etc) i was really surprised at how snappy and fast it works (and resources are absolutely normal compared to gnome - at least for me)

debian-kde is very light on resources and KDE itself, specially after the 4.6 series is a lot lighter and faster;
