Debian: black screen lock-up

I've had a bit of odd trouble with the 2 Debian versions turning the screen black and leaving me no option but to turn off power. Now, as expected, the install has broken down because of turning off the power. The black screens seem to happen when accessing graphic files, such as with some AVIs, or through some browser activity.

I have re-installed quite a few times, but it keeps on happening. The computer is a DELL and I haven't experienced graphic problems before.

So, am I the only one experiencing these black screen lock-ups?
Any sort of solution?

Are you using Debian or LMDE and it's 32 bit or 64 bit Debian? Is your CPU 64 Bit ? If it's LMDE have you tried playing in LiveDVD and what happens?

I am trying to use both Debian versions of LinuxMint, so LMDE Xfce and Gnome.
The processor is a 3 GHz Pentium D, so I use the 32-bit versions.

I have used the LiveDVD versions while and after installing and I don't remember getting a black screen while doing so.

Trying playing AVI's etc in LiveDVD. When it's playing open your 'systems monitor' and check for CPU utilization. What grahics card does your PC has and hope you have enough ram?
