I tried to install the first Virtualbox option offered in Synaptic which is Virtualbox 4.1.0 but it doesn't install correctly.
Here are the errors:
E: virtualbox: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: virtualbox-dkms: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: virtualbox-qt: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: virtualbox-ose-dkms: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root.
When I type: sudo modprobe vboxdrv in Terminal I get,
FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.
Virtualbox 4.1.0 does start but then asks for virtualbox-dkms.
I installed Virtualbox 4 but that will not load Windows 8 64bit as it says I do not have a 64bit processor!? But I do!

Re: Virtualbox troubles
I think you have to open Virtualbox, go to settings, click on processor, and checkmark that box that says "Enable PAE/NX."
Then try installing it.
Oh yea, did you download the AMD64 version of Virtualbox? There are 2 versions.

Re: Virtualbox troubles
Did you also install your Linux as 64 bit? You can check by running this command from the terminal:
It should reply "x86_64", any other response means you have Linux Mint installed as 32 bit and you won't be able to VirtualBox a 64 bit system I think.
Code: Select all
arch
Re: Virtualbox troubles
arch says - x86_64
I knew I had 64bit installed anyway as some websites I visit tell my on their pages what operating system I have and which kernel, how much RAM, etc. They know far too much about my system!
I tied it with and without "Enable PAE/NX." enabled and it makes no difference. I tried lots of different settings.
I have discovered though that I am supposed to make a change in the BIOS of my system that will allow Virtualbox to pass CPU info directly to whatever OS I wish to run but unfortunately the restrictive Japanese manufacturer doesn't allow that change to be made this change in the BIOS. Wonderful!
I am in the process of downloading a 32bit version of Windows 8 to try ... ...about a 1/2hr gone and only 3hrs left to go on my slow 11Mb/sec (tested by speedtest.net) line!!!!

Re: Virtualbox troubles
Apologies for misquoting the arch output as "amd64", indeed "x86_64" is the output given on a 64 bit installation.
I'm assuming that when you created the virtual machine for Windows 7, you chose as version "Windows 7 (64 bit)" in VirtualBox?

Re: Virtualbox troubles
You are forgiven.
32bit version arrived sooner than promised.
Tried just about every setting that made sense ... and even a few that didn't!
Here are the results:
I did get another error message on different set-up but couldn't be bothered saving it.
I don't know why Microsoft give a message saying an unexpected error occurred as isn't this a normal event in Windows!?
I think it is not going to work.
Just tried Gentoo 32 & 64 but no luck either. Get same error with both. Will try Linux Mint Ubuntu flavour next.

Re: Virtualbox troubles
Fedora 17alpha doesn't run either in Virtualbox.
I tried to boot Fedora17a after a restart from DVD drive but it refuses to boot. This was not a problem with their previous releases.
Debian 6 LiveCD also refused to boot from DVD drive, as did a few others I tried.
Seems some Distros are going the route of not wishing to run from CD/DVD drives despite releasing LiveCD/DVDs - weird!
Found a BIOS update that allows virtulisation to be switched on but it stops LMDE Xfce 64bit from booting so I had to disabled it. It allowed booting to old Windows no problem! There is a long well established connection between this manufacturer and Microsoft.
I set Virtualbox to Linux 2.6 64bit as LinuxMint 12 32bit worked with Linux 2,6.
Copy of LinuxMint 12 64bit output in Virtualbox due to not being able to set Intel/V in BIOS.
At least I now know what the problems is.
I accordance with a very wise wish expressed in another part of this forum I am providing system info.
