[SOLVED] LMDE ATI (Seg Fault) (laptop)

ok so i "updated" to the ... testing ... LMDE 64bit ---Xfce

My sources.list looks like

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free

The driver falls to work, It gives a segmentation fault ... Guess this error is AMD / ATI problem ??

this one looks more or less the same ... http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=671320 ....

So I'm going to try something here and if it works I'll post what i did ..

WEll i'm out of ideas now, the bug report said it was fixed ... maybe this is a different error .... not to sure ...

if someone has any ideas i've love to hear them ...... i have been using linux for about 15 years now ,,, and i don't know somethings i should know but i can generaly recover the BOX from error, even fixed a busybox once, by fluke ....

in anycase ... here what happens ...

I install the AMD / ATI proprietary driver .. all goes well restart ..

then it says that X-faied to start .... and says no screens ... so i manually fix the xorg to point to the right pci bus ..
reboot
then the error above this post happens..

I've tried everything i can think of .... the only thing that i just thought about, is maybe it' the screen resolution ... got a squishy screen 1366*768 or what ever it is ...

not sure if a bad rez can cause a seg fault, but i'm going to try this when i get some time today ..

So if i get the driver working in Debian squeeze ... can i make a deb for it and pass it over to LMDE?

i'll try it anyway, unless someone thinks that it is a bad idea..

Thanks

Ok well i got it working by following the Squeeze instructions ... http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary/#Squeeze ...

as far as i know the driver straight from amd still fails ... gives me no screens... I did try modifying the //etc/X11/xorg.conf, but got either SEG FAULT, or no screens .....

however the above worked great ...

so i hope this info can help others ...

oh except that there is no need for step 3 .... doesn't let you remove it without restart (easiest way), as it is still running. ... you will get dropped to a shell ...
