LMDE on Lenovo Ideapad Y480

I have been using Mint 13 on this laptop, but have recently found out of LMDE and prefer it over Mint 13.

Problem is when I boot from the live cd/dvd of LMDE my graphics are totally screwed up (even in compatibility mode) and it doesn't find either network adapter (wired or wireless).

Has anyone else had a similar issue?
