I have just installed lmde xfce on my laptop. I am going to install ati drivers for my HD5650.

Of the two methods fglrx or the ati installer which is the best? I install the driver to improve the battery life of my laptop.

the fglrx drivers in the repository are not as recent as the driver you would get from ati.

I used sgfxi to install the video drivers. they pull the latest ati binary driver. I do note though that some mesa and fglrx packages seem to be installed as well during the install process.

So sgfxi would be the way to go. It's down the page http://smxi.org/

It really depends what your goal is. What is it you want to accomplish?
