X fails to start after any linux kernel update/installation

Postby Aalexeey on Sat Dec 29, 2012 4:45 pm

I had tried to install many different linux kernels, from LMDE repositories too, but I get xserver fail to start always. The nvidia driver I use is .....173xx version. No reinstallation can help, nor "nvidia-xconfig". I tried to delete "xorg.conf" file so system was started, but in very low color range 8bits or less. The "nouveau" driver makes same. The X is not starting even if nvidia driver reinstall only. I am running a linux kernel from UP4, the system updated to UP6, but no linux kernel, the X was not able to start with it, so I left old one. Tried everything I found in network, good I saved clonzilla image erlier. The graphic card is NV5500.

When you installed the kernel, did you include the headers also? What kernel are you trying to run? Are you installing these manually or using an automated installer? If installing manually, you need to be careful what you select so that the free drivers aren't installed also.

Also when you ran the upgrade, did you 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'?

Installing nvidia graphics drivers require that the free drivers be uninstalled. I have never seen a case where this was ever different with any nvidia card I ever used.

Installing nvidia-detect from the synaptic is one good way to be sure you install the proper drivers. Another would be to use device driver manager that will do all the heavy lifting for you. http://schoelje.nl/lmdekde/packages/ddm_0.5.1_all.deb

I'am not from the Moon, and using Linux long enougth to be a little bit advanced user. (LMDE) is a rolling distribution, so it's updating itself and continuesly. My PC:
ASUS P2-99B (ZX) AT + Tualatin Award BIOS Patched
CPU: PIII-S 1400/133 + Abit SlotKET III FC-PGA2 Modified, 105/35 1100MHz
RAM: 512Mb 256 + 128 + 128 PC133
Video: AGP2x "Point of View" NV 5500 AGP 256Mb
2ndUSB1.0: USB Audio Speakers "Altec"
1stPCI: "NEC" Adapter 5xUSB2.0
2ndPCI: "D-Link" DFE-520TX Fast Ethernet Adapter VIA
3rdPCI: "Gembird" VIA VT6421 2+1xSATA1/1xIDE + "Memphis" Modified VT6421 RAID BIOS
1stHDD: Seagate ST1000DL002 1Tb/5900RPM SATA0
2ndHDD: Seagate ST32000542AS 2Tb/5900RPM SATA1
CD/DVD: Sony DVD DDU1621/LG DVD RW MB ATA Secondary channel

2ndUSB2.0: Printer/Scanner Samsung CLX-3185
PS/2: Mouse "Genius"
Power: Codegen ATX 300W + All PCI's & AGP 3.3V direct supply
OS: Windows XP SP3 + grub24dos SATA0/Linux Mint Debian Edition Mate Desktop SATA1
The driver is NVIDIA aprooved "173xx" series for NV 5500, that's the only driver I have installed for NVIDIA. Headers linux-headers-3.2.....i386.deb were included too, same as linux-image-3.2.....i386.deb, linux-manual-3.2......i386.deb, linux-source-3.2.....i386.deb, linux-doc-3.2.....i386.deb. Even with my current linux kernel I can't run X after nvidia-config was running. So I didn't touch anything now, I had tried to reinstall NVIDIA driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run for new/different linux kernels, but it was gliching after unpack completed with error (Never ever before with other Linuxes) . I tried to delete all non-free nvidia driver & accessories and install the nouveau driver, same I can't run X. I have Linux kernel compilled by me (from the Original) for that exact PC, it's running very fast to compare with original, but as I sad with "xorg.conf" file deleted only and low colors range, same like all other linux kernels. LMDE makes me crazy, so much problems from nothing, it's gliching with all PC's I have old or new doesn't metter. The Mate and the rolling distribution that is thing moves me to use LMDE. I'am planing to move back to SUSE with MATE (exist now), same nice green colour, easy upgrades and never ever hardware problems with all PCs I have.

Uninstall all your nvidia drivers and try ddm, linked above.
