Good morning fellows, after and epic battle night against video drivers on Linux, I finally won this one. The origin of all my problems on Linux since I restarted using it, was the video driver. My laptop is a Dell inspiron 14Z with a dual GPD ATI video card, I bought it a month ago and struggle a lot with it all this time. First it came with Win 8, what I consider its another windows failure, and face it guys “It sucks and suck a lot”; it had this UEFI booting system (first time a deal whit it, don't really know much about it) and RAID protected partitions that made the installation process harder than ever. Finally after reading a lot I managed to erase everything from the hard disks, and that was the moment when I consider it “finally it is my laptop”.
First I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and gnomebuntu, nice distros but use a lot o power and I am really concerted about battery life and last. In none of them I manged to install the propietary ATI driver, although I could had use the open driver for the integrated video card, I found that my laptop was over heated all time and battery last lest than in windows. In normal mode with the intel driver that ubuntu installs by default the laptop consumes about 28-34W while simply working with Write and battery last just about and hour and a half.
Later I decide to test the mother of all distros and made it to install Debian testing; very nice distro even in testing mode, with the same intel community driver the power consumption reduced to 21 -25 W and the heating problems reduced a lot. I managed to install Doom 3 but performance wasn't the best as the integrated intel video card has just 126 MB on ram and the dedicated one 1024 MB, so in order to take advantage of it I tried to install the proprietary drivers without succeeding (dont really understand why).
Finally I heard about LMDE, tried and at first boot I had the same power consumption as in ubuntu. Oh my God!!! what the heck, I wanted to quit Linux and tried installing Win 7, God d.....!!!, it dint even recognized the eth0 or wlan cards, no sound at all and of course bad video......downloading drivers for everything?.. no way, on all my Linux installation everything almost worked out o the box.... back to LMDE..... then I tried the device manager and installed the proprietary ATI drivers ....nice......power consumption reduced to 17 – 21 W on simple tasking and 25-30W while using 2 virtual machines and other programs, but guest what, no resuming from hibernation or suspending state, no lid closing cause it would brake the system and no Doom 3 ROE cause it complained about libGl or something like that..
Last nigth after trying all drivers from community I finally found that the resume from hibernation and suspend, lid closing crashes and libGl problem, was becouse the ATI driver that LMDE has on the repos.... why?....(please guys try to find out why) all others (intel, radeon, etc) had no problem with resuming from hibernation but poor graphic performance...at the end of the night when I was about to quit even from computers, I decided to try out installing my self the ATI drivers following the ubuntu tutorial from community, the only thing I did different this time was installing from rescue mode... and guest what.....yeap...... everything is working just marvelous (resuming is working, can close the lid and play f... doom) I send you a print screen to show you I am not bullsh.... or something...so... in conclusion, there is a lot of working in video drivers for Linux, but, there should be a point where hardware producers could integrate their soft with Linux.... I hope that main developers could look deeper into the intel, mesa or radeon community drivers to get better power consumption performance, and also to integrate better the ATI proprietary into the repos. Finally forgive my English writing if it wasn't so good, I would like to participated in the community for translations or something else rather than programing, what should I do?..... thanks a lot for your help, best regards and greetings from Colombia.
