DVD drive doesn't show up

Postby Minzen on Sun Nov 17, 2013 8:36 am

A few days ago I've installed LMDE and today I wanted to play a DVD. But unfortunately both of the DVD drives don't show up under "devices".
I didn't change anything in the BIOS.

What does this command tell you; do any of these devices show up there?
Code: Select all
sudo lshw -C disk

Have you checked your /var/log/syslog file after boot to check for errors or warnings, or run the `dmesg` command to do the same?

Thanks for your quick response!
I used the first command and I got this response:
Code: Select all
sudo: lshw: command not found

If I want to open the syslog file, pluma tells me that it can't decode it (even if I select all the codes...)

The output of "dmesg" is the following:

Taking some lines from your output after searching for cdrom:
Code: Select all
    [    4.577343] scsi 0:0:0:0: CD-ROM            HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS10  EL00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
...
    [    5.068308] scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access     ATA      Hitachi HDP72502 GM2O PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
    [    5.068981] scsi 2:0:0:0: CD-ROM            HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR-H30N 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
...
    [    5.084588] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    [    5.084593] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
    [    5.084873] sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
...
    [    5.087522] sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 4x/52x cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    [    5.087784] sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1

So looks like at least two of these devices are working and should be on /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1 (not sure what happens to scsi 0:0:0:0 device). Try changing to either of these devices in VLC (open VLC, go to Media menu, select Open Disc, change "Disc device" to /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1).

As to lshw not being installed, it's apparently not installed by default on LMDE? Install the package lshw to get this handy hardware investigation tool.

Edit: I noticed you are running a non-PAE 32-bit kernel? You have a 64-bit processor so it has PAE support. Recommend you open Device Driver Manager from your menu and install the PAE kernel from there to get the best performance from your computer. You are currently using only one core of your dual core processor :|

Thank you very much! This worked:
So looks like at least two of these devices are working and should be on /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1 (not sure what happens to scsi 0:0:0:0 device). Try changing to either of these devices in VLC (open VLC, go to Media menu, select Open Disc, change "Disc device" to /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1).

A huge "THANK YOU" for your fast help :)

I edited my post with some more info; hope you caught that also--about your kernel... :)

Now I have installed PAE and I can see in the System Monitor, that I use 2 kernels. :)
This is a great improvement BUT:
My screen resolution is set to 640x480 and I can't change it because LMDE doesn't identifies my monitor.
Furthermore, I get an error after booting:
Code: Select all
Loading the kernel.
Loading, please wait...
can't load module microcode (kernel/arch/x86/kernel/microcodeXXXX

I took a photo of this but unfortunately I wasn't able to get all the screen on it so there are a few characters left instead of the XXXX.
Does this error affects my screen resolution?

That's weird. Perhaps something related to your graphics card driver. I think the old kernel will still be installed, and you can choose to boot that in GRUB (hold down left shift key on your keyboard during boot if GRUB boot menu isn't shown by default).

Share output of this command for others to help you on graphics card driver:
Code: Select all
inxi -SGx

I fixed this with a different solution:
I opened the Device Driver Manager and my graphic driver was changed?! So I chose the original one, restarted the system and now everything's perfect.

However, I have a different problem:
If I set the volume to maximum and play a song, it's "lagging" or how shall I put it, the volume controller jumps up and down a little bit. So it sounds aweful. I have to turn down the volume under 80% and then there's no problem anymore.
