(solved?)Old SSD card doesn't use TRIM

Postby wyrdoak on Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:39 am

I found out the this Dell used an old 16gb ePCI mini SSD card when I when to try to put in a larger HDD. :lol: So had to switch things around a bit.

It doesn't support TRIM but this it what I've done so far. Not sure is I did right or not.
Code: Select all
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc   /proc   proc   defaults   0   0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=5dc466c6-b8d0-4e40-818a-0f38d041fab3   /   ext4   noatime,discard,errors=remount-ro   0   1
tmpfs   /tmp       tmpfs   defaults,noatime,mode=1777,size=15%   0  0
tmpfs   /var/tmp   tmpfs   defaults,noatime,size=5%   0  0
tmpfs   /var/log   tmpfs   defaults,noatime,size=5%   0  0
# a swapfile is not a swap partition, no line here
#   use  dphys-swapfile swap[on|off]  for that

I put Half my swap on ZRAM and used dphys-swapfile for the other half. Now with FireFox running and an audiobook in the background this is now my RAM usage, kind of up from before :lol:
Code: Select all
$ free -m
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           997        775        221          0         27        437
-/+ buffers/cache:        310        687
Swap:         2021          0       2021

Here's the speed I've gotten so far.
Code: Select all
# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   994 MB in  2.00 seconds = 497.07 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 208 MB in  3.02 seconds =  68.86 MB/sec

This is a Xfce desktop, didn't think it would take much more. All I can say is things are much faster than before. :D

After moving all my tmp files and logs to RAM and cleaning up the harddrive I now have 9gbs of usable space left. Before it was 4.6.

Looks alright, but if it doesn't support TRIM then I'm not sure the "discard" option will do anything.

You can check if TRIM is working or not by trying this:

Instead of "discard", you can always try putting an fstrim command into a cron job:

(see point 3).

I think I got fstrim working, so I'll just play with it a while to see if I got what I needed done.
