First of all, I'm just average user with no programming background. I know how to copy-paste commands in terminal but dont know what they actually do.

Anyway, so I downloaded the latest upgrade last week then came by this forum to install nvidia driver from this thread:

My card was geforce 9300M, it is an AiO PC from HP. Quite old so I dont remember the model. LMDE was installed for a couple of years, and when I check the graphic card driver, it was not the nvidia one (so one of the generic, i think). Anyway, I decided to install by using this command:

apt install nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-dkms nvidia-glx-legacy-173xx build-essential
nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig

Then after restart, it did not even go to the login screen, just a text in large dialog box that say something break and give a button to log out. When I press it, screen simply goes black.

So, how do i restore back to my old setting?

To try getting Nvidia to work. Try running. (from command line--that is the black screen with prompt) If that does not work deleting (or re-naming, if you want to save it for reference)
etc/x11/xorg.conf
MAY bring you back to the default driver.

You don't need the legacy driver, install the normal one.
