[Solved] LMDE 201403 not seeing USB HDD Docking Station

Postby AlanWalker on Tue Apr 29, 2014 3:05 pm

I've a Hard Disk Drive Docking Station USB HUB Card Reader (this one: http://tinyurl.com/kpxjeso) that works in my XP Pro SP3 Thinkpad T60 system but not in my LMDE 201403 Thinkpad T500 system.

The disk in the docking station is a 2TB SATA drive with two partitions. The station, disk, and USB cables work are not at fault.

I can read from, and write to, a USB thumb drive without problem simply by inserting the thumb drive into a USB slot.

Looking on the Linux Mint forums the closest thread I've found (http://tinyurl.com/kwggfxv) is 3 years or so old and, as near as I can tell, its resolution is not applicable to this instance of the problem - "sudo rmmod uas" yields "Error: Module uas is not currently loaded"; with that response I take it that LMDE 201403 isn't loading the uas module, so blacklisting it isn't an answer.

The following commands have been issued with an 8gb SD card in the T500's internal SD card reader and should have no bearing on the issue other than (I think) its presence is noted in the output below.

With the docking station USB cable plugged into the LMDE system "lsusb" yields:

alan@alan's_t500 ~ $ sudo lsusb

Bus 008 Device 016: ID 152d:2352 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. ATA/ATAPI Bridge

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

With the docking station USB cable removed from the LMDE system, "lsusb" yields:

alan@alan's_t500 ~ $ sudo lsusb
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
alan@alan's_t500 ~ $

Plugging the USB docking station in and waiting a few moment, then entering "dmesg | tail -n 30"
yields:

Power over the USB cable isn't an issue.

Has anyone recently seen this problem?

Does anyone have an idea about how to proceed?

Check /var/log/syslog for entries when plugging the docking station. If there is some line which mentions gvfs and segfault it might be the same problem as with usb-connected digital cameras, in both cases lsusb lists the appliance but the memory card is not accessible: viewtopic.php?f=198&t=146167

Thanks for your reply.

It appears that there are new versions of the deb files that your cite makes note of that
fixed that issue back in early March.

I can assure you that you do *not* want to install those newer versions LMDE 201403 UD8.

My issue with the docking station has become a side issue but I'll tend to it sooner than later.

I'll post my results as they happen here.

thanks again,

@AlanWalker

Take a look at this thread: ==> viewtopic.php?f=191&t=164748 <== which was yet another discussion of updating 'gvfs' files, but for LMDE 32-bit. The info found there can be applied to LMDE 64-bit as well.

Be sure to scroll down and read the posts _AFTER_ mine in that thread, for much, much more elaboration.

Updated with the equivalent amd64 files, but at least one error occurred and I was left with a system that on boot said it 'could not open Desktop' and left me with a blank desktop.

I restored my system to return to normal, and "normal" on this LMDE amd64 system is 'no USB Docking Station'.

Well, whatever is causing this problem is at least in LMDE 64bit Cinnamon (I'[ve not tried LMDE 32bit Cinnamon).

Nemo can see, and access, this USB external hard drive with Mint 12 64bit Cinnamon and Mint 16 64bit Cinnamon.

Installing deb files gvfs* amd64 and libgphoto2-6* amd 64 files has trashed my system twice (once because of an oversight error), but I have learned about tar restores, so that's a good thing come of this.

Research on the strings "mtp-probe" and "not an MTP device" (found in syslog) has not been fruitfull.

I'll continue looking.

Resolved: for whatever reason, the USB external disk docking station noted in the first post to this thread is unpredictably marginal. Its worked with other Mint editions on the T500 involved, but not LMDE.

That docking station works without problem under XP Pro on a T60, but not this T500.

A different docking station does work on this system running LMDE.
