Canon MG7520 Printer Installation

Post by PaulW »

I recently bought a Canon MG7520 printer/scanner and tried many attempts to install it on my PC (LinuxMint LMDE 3.11-2-amd64 x86_64) without success. After much research, I finally managed to get it installed and thought I'd share my experience with others.

My printer is installed via ethernet cable on my home router (TrendNet TEW-692GR). The router also provides wireless connections within my home. A visit to Canon's support site indicated that drivers were not necessary for Linux. That turned out to be very wrong! After much digging around, I found drivers on Canon's United Kingdom site. Here's the link to it:
http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer ... N&os=Linux
There were no drivers specific for my MG7520 printer, but I guessed that the entire MG7500 series utilized the same drivers. So I downloaded the drivers for MG7540:
  • Printer: cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb.tar.gz
    (Guide): guide-pd-5.00-1_en.tar.gz
    Scanner: scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb.tar.gz
    (Guide): guide-sd-3.00-1_en.tar.gz
I extracted these to folders as follows:
  • Printer:
    cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb
    • packages
      resources
      install.sh
      guide-pd-5.00-1_en
  • Scanner:
    scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb
    • packages
      resources
      install.sh
      guide-sd-3.00-1_en
Note: The resulting guide folders contain guide_index.htm which provides instructions.

Next, I installed the printer (system messages and my input follow)...
1. cd cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb
2. sudo ./install.sh
Register Printer
  • [Enter]
Connection Method
  • Selected 2) Network
Searching for printers...
  • Select [1] Canon MG7500 series (F4-81-39-CD-FA-91 192.168.10.128)
Register Printer
Enter the printer name [MG7500LAN]. (I used a different name.)
  • MG7520-Net
Set as Default Printer
  • n (I use another printer as my default.)
Installation has been completed.
Printer Name : MG7520-Net
Select this printer name for printing.

Then, I installed the scanner (system messages and my input follow)...
1. cd scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb
2. sudo ./install.sh
Installation has been completed.
  • I created shortcut for scangearmp2 on desktop
    First time run:
    • Cannot find available scanners.
      [OK]
      [Update Scanner List]
      Select Canon MG7500 series (F4-81-39-CD-FA-91)
Hope this helps someone.

Just wanted to say, first of all, Thank You very much for posting this.

And second of all to confirm that it works perfectly. I can print and scan
from linux. As an added tidbit, the program to use to drive the scanner from
the computer is /usr/bin/scangearmp2
