external monitor resolution

Hi all,

Recently I downloaded and installed LMDE after finding it on DistroWatch. I'm enjoying the rolling updates and the speed but I'm looking to try and hook it up to my external monitor (Dell U2410) and cannot get the resolution above 1024 x 768. Now I run a T61p laptop with GeForce FX 570M (256mb) card, the native laptop resolution is 1920x1200 and I would like it to be the same on the external, using the external as the primary monitor.

At the moment I'm not using the nvidia drivers as I know that they can be such a hassle and I'm not sure if I'll need the 3D acceleration so if you have any solutions I would love to hear them!
