Scanner only works if connected during boot

Hey guys,
You may remember me from a few months ago when I was having a similar problem with my cdrom drive. See that thread here. Now I'm having the same problem with my scanner...it only works if it's turned on and plugged in during bootup... if I turn it off or unplug it, it will not work again unless I reboot. Highly annoying, as you can imagine. I'm guessing that the solution is to be added to some group, as it was in the case of the CD drive, but I don't know which one it wants. I did add myself to the "scanner" group, but that didn't solve the problem. Any insight would be appreciated.
