Can't add networked printer [SOLVED]

Post by ddalley »

Actually, I can't add any printer because when I click on system-config-printer/add, nothing happens.

I have not come across this problem before and adding printers does not seem to be a big problem on this forum. When I follow help, it wants server name and IP address which aren't presented through CUPS.

How do I resolve this problem?

Thanks, richyrich.

Yesterday, I checked installed files against another computer that did networked printing just fine. There were two files missing and I installed them. When I checked the three files listed in your linked topic, they were all there, too. When I try to add a printer, absolutely nothing happens.

I tried to use the web link in the CUPS menu, but when it asked for my user name and password, it didn't accept them, plus, now, it won't even let me check on what I entered or let me try again. I am pretty sure I entered them correctly, but it is a no-go.

Okay, it sounds like it may be the network . . what kind of network are you attached to ? router ? wired/wireless? How is the printer attached ?
Please be as specific as you can.

The printer is networked through a NAS box, the D-Link DIR-323. Other computers are able to print with the current set-up and this was tested last night, so the problem does relate only to this one Linux install.

However, I don't think that matters yet because the "Add new printer" part won't do anything. As mentioned above, when I click on "Add" nothing happens.

I opened a terminal and typed 'sudo system-config-printer' (then my password) and it worked perfectly. Frustrating; why doesn't the utility just ask for the user's password to authenticate, rather than flat-out refusing to do anything, without a hint of what to do next? Even the cups utility (localhost:631 in a browser) just said "forbidden". Anyhow, try sudo.

Tried and failed, so something is "wrong" with my install.

Is the printer config something that can be safely removed then re-added?

Why don't you just do a reinstall of CUPS via synaptic or your preferred package manager; for the user you logon with
  • I would assume that user is the admin group member ID, and your first user created during the Linux installation
Then after a reboot, see if the CUPS browser (web connection works)
  • http//:localhost:631
  • 127.0.0.1:631
    --equivalences..

I wonder if one of these two situations are possible:

(1) cups isn't running

Code: Select all

sudo service cups restart
(2) Your firewall is blocking port 631

Another point (in addition to the firewall, you'll want to open port 631 though that shouldn't matter for localhost I don't think?); if you're using a browser and the admin interface asks for a password, enter 'root' as the user name, then enter your sudo password. If you try to use your (sudo) user name, it'll reject it.

Printing config runs, it's just that it won't let me add a new printer.

I reinstalled CUPS, but there is no difference - I still can't add a printer.

I'd like you to try something . . restart CUPS with altair4's command above, then try this :
  • 1. Goto http://localhost:631/admin
    2. Press the button "Edit Configuration File"
    3. Accept with "Save Changes" and provide correct username and password.
    4. Add a new printer as normal.
Would you by any chance be using the Chrome browser ?

Chrome = yes, but the result using the GUI was identical.

The result of your exercise was:

Edit Configuration File Error

Unable to upload cupsd.conf file:

Forbidden

I read a similar problem thread in the Arch forums, and it seemed to affect only Chrome/Chromium . . . can you try it in Firefox/Iceweasel ?

Has this issue been solved? I had the same problem with LMDE64, but I found the following worked for me. It seems long-winded, but it's really just a step-by-step walk-through of the process.
1. Maybe useful to begin, install smbfs in Synaptic
2. Don't use CUPS yet
3. Open Menu>Administartion>Printing from the main menu
4. Click the dropdown arrow next to Add and choose Printer
5. Enter your computer admin passwaord
6. Network Printer>Find Network Printer – wait a bit and the utility should find any printers on your network
7. Choose the correct printer and click Forward
8. Choose your printer from the list if available, if not there then
9. Download file from wherever, CD or Internet
10. Choose Provide PPD file from Choose Drive choices
11. Select the downloaded printer PPD and click Forward
12. Make selection of functions > Forward
13. Write a name for your printer and click Apply
14. Enter your password to authenticate the action
15. Enter password again – leave root
16. Print test page

17. If the printer still won't do its thing, then open Printing from the main menu again
18. Select your printer, cick the Server menu Server Settings and check 'Publish shared printers connected to this system'
19. Enter password
20. Thereafter CUPS can be used in a Web-browser to manage and configure http://localhost:631/admin

Hopefully that fixes things. :D

I have the same D-Link DNS-323 with HP Deskjet 5100, 4 Windows 7 PCs and 2 Linux Mint work fine. On 2 LM 11 PCs added via "Windows Printer Via Samba" option under Network Printer.

LMDE 201109 does not have that option :(

How can I add windows printer via samba option in LMDE?

My HP Photosmart connected to LMDE PC via USB cable does not printer either :( LMDE detected the printer during an installation tho but it doesn't print

Any suggestion? Thank you.

On 2 LM 11 PCs added via "Windows Printer Via Samba" option under Network Printer.

LMDE 201109 does not have that option
All things Samba in Debian based Mint is not installed or configured correctly. Follow these steps and see if you get things working:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 18#p315218

For printing you'll only need smbclient, libsmbclient, and python-smbc but you might as well fix everything else while your there.
