Just thought I'd post some info about a failed attempt to install the nvidia drivers on LMDE 64bit. I've since got it working following "the debian way"
I'm guessing my problems were some hardware compatibility issue, as to exactly what I'm not sure. But here's my specs anyway:
Two monitors using DVI
* Samsung SyncMaster
First I thought I'd just download and install the latest nvidia driver and follow their instructions
I've installed the nvidia drivers manually in the past on other systems and never had any major issues. However, since nouvea is the default driver in LMDE and the nvidia drivers won't install with it in use, you need to disable it. So did so, restarted and was logged into X. This was all fine until I had to shutdown X. Tried switching to another teminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and just got a black screen, same on the others. Switching back to 7 returned me to my desktop. At this point I figured I'd done something wrong in disabling the nouveau drivers, so I undid my changes and downloaded sgfxi http://smxi.org/
So booted into a terminal without X running, ran sgfxi which was all good until I was told nouveau had to be disabled to finish installing the nvidia driver (can't remember exactly what stage the nvidia installer was at when this happened). I was asked to reboot and run sgfxi to finish installing. So rebooted, got past grub, saw about 10 lines pop up on screen, then got a black screen, same as before.Switching to other terminals, still a black screen. I could login, execute commands and reboot, I just couldn't see what was going on.
The following was turning up in the syslog which appeared to be the only thing relevant:

A couple of hours googling returned nothing particularly similar to my problem, or threads which are way over my skill level. Just as I was about to post a thread asking for help, I came across this thread mentioning the debian method through synaptic
Which in turn led me onto the aforementioned "How to install NVIDIA 3D drivers, the debian way"
Followed these instructions to a tee and had no issues whatsoever. Just thought this may come in handy for others out there.
