Hallelujah! - decrease system temp. (Gallium Radeon drivers)

Postby xircon on Sun Nov 20, 2011 5:51 am

I have been suffering major problems using the Gallium open source drivers on a fresh install:

>High temperatures.

>High (and loud) fan speeds.

I stumbled across this after reading what seemed like half the internet (but obviously the wrong half  )

Code: Select all
n5010 molly2 # echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
n5010 molly2 # echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

It should be noted that the "low" setting may not work on all laptops. The "dynpm" setting caused my display to flicker occasionally.

Temperatures reduced by +10 deg Celsius immediately, fan, still on, but quieter.

I recommend making a note of the original settings before changing (just cat the above files).

Not a perfect solution, but a lot better.
