ATI/AMD Driver causes garbled/malformed/broken menus

Greetings to the community, this is an edited version first post which is now deleted, and this time, in the correct forum.


I recently installed the latest LDME update (Linux Mint Debian Edition 12 64[x86_x64] bit), and then I installed the official AMD Catalyst™ Proprietary Display Driver (both 11.11 and 11.12) and now the menus and also the context menus are broken.

Specs (HP Pavillion g6):
CPU: AMD Athlon P360 Dual-core processor
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics
RAM: 3 GB DDR3

Here is what I mean:






My procedure:

1. Ctrl-Alt-F2:
2. sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
3. cd /usr/share/ati
4. sudo sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh
5. sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
6. Optional: sudo rm -r /usr/include/ATI
7. Optional: sudo rm -r /etc/ati
8. sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
9. cd Downloads
10. sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-12-x86.x86_64.run
11. sudo /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial
12. Reboot

How do I fix it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.: If there is no fix and this is a known issue, how to get back to the previous, ORIGINAL "free"/"open-source" pre-installed/pre-configured drivers for ATI/Radeon, that LDME had before?

EDIT: I tried this,but however, it doesn't work cause GUI is not drawn (also I get depedency error with "libpixman-1-0 0.20.2-0ubuntu1" while trying to re-install "xserver-xorg-core").

I cannot revert to the original open-source ati drivers... it's impossible.. I cannot restore xserver/xorg without failing.. From now and on, my system only works with the FGLRX driver, but I get broken menus.

Please Help! At least tell me how to get the previous driver back .

Have you tried using the sgfxi script? It automates most video driver installations, giving you the posibility to choose between the diferent driver alternatives for your system. In my experience, it worked out very nicely and fixed most of the graphic issues i had when using gnu+linux.

Don't think smxi will help, think ATI/AMD drivers do not play nicely with Gnome3. Same problem here, dropped back to the Gallium drivers.

I uninstalled everthing from synaptic (but you didn't install from synaptic, so think there is a script you can run?). Then:

sudo updatedb
locate fglrx > delme.txt
gedit delme.txt

Then deleted all of the files manually.

Removed xorg.conf.

Then (this is the bit I cannot remember) think I also did modprobe radeon and may have dpkg-reconfigure, but can't remember package name

Try:

sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri fglrx-modaliases
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core

Google remove fglrx, this came up as a visited page.

Clonezilla your drive first.

Please help. Now I cannot use the GUI (GNOME3).

P.S.: I did from this CTRL + ALT + F1 terminal, logged as superuser.

Or reinstall fglrx and all of the packages unistalled at least you will have a working system.

I did tell you to clone your drive first!!!!!!!

Yes at least this works! But I have garbled menus

I know I had a struggle with this, try using aptitude instead of apt-get and add the packages it complains about to the install list. Read the output carefully and keep saying no, until it works out a way to do it. What do you have in your sources.list?
