USB Printer can't install

Hi,

I have a Canon Pixma ip4500 which is connected via USB. It is not possible do install this - and other USB printers - in LMDE. Some research has established that this might be a problem with the particular kernel LMDE is using. There is a solution for Linux Mint to upgrade the kernel, however I failed to find a similar solution for LMDE .

How can I persuade LMDE to recognise my USB printer or alternatively how can I upgrade the kernel in order to get this vital functionality.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Problem solved!!. Apparently Linux Kernel 3.0.0-12 was the problem. Launchpad has several users who encountered the same issue with this kernel. Updating to Kernel 3.0.0-13 solved the detection problem. So if you have a USB Epson Stylus printer that is not detected, than upgrade your Kernel to 3.0.0-13. Ubuntu 11.10 comes with Kernel 3.0.0-12 as default, if it had come with 3.0.0-13 than I wouldn't have had an issue. So check the 3.0...kernel version that Mint 11 and LMDE updates to. If 3.0.0-12 than avoid it. Go for 3.0.0-13.

Canon supply drivers for Debian. Some of the older printers are 32bit only. Go to Cannon Europe and download the driver.

I have not used this particular Canon driver , but usually all you need to do is unzip the download and as sudo run the install.sh script.

At the moment you will end up with a 3.2.x kernel and it will update through normal system updates. As an alternative you can grab newer kernels from Debian, but if the Liquorix kernels work for you then that is the easiest approach. If there is any issue with the new kernel you can revert to the older kernel from the initial boot screen.

You're right - they aren't indeed - especially once you have found out that your son has not plugged in the usb cable properly .....

He is still doing push ups as I type.
