Just installed Mint 12 LMDE Gnome. The graphics card keeps running very fast, producing a high pitched noise.
This is a dual boot set-up. The same happens when booting into Windows 7, but only until Windows starts. Then the card slows down and runs very silently.
I have to achieve the same with Mint, otherwise I can't use it, it is too annoying. So, I have a few questions:
1) I suppose I have to find out what sort of card it is - how can I do that without going into Windows?
2) What do I have to do to silence the card?
Thank you.

Installing the NVIDIA drivers solved the problem.
