[SOLVED] Custom PC Freeze

Post by gordon1992 »

*** SOLUTION ***
Install nVidia proprietary drivers. I installed via the nVidia-something.run file obtained from nVidia website. I used export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.4 to avoid the gcc version clash. So far so good.
*** SOLUTION ***

Hello, this seems to be a similar issue in relation to: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... lit=freeze

I started using Linux Mint with the Lisa release. My netbook will run anything fine but Lisa's installer will randomly freeze and the operating system once installed will randomly freeze. Complete lock up, cannot restart X-Server. Requires physical switch off. I installed LMDE XFCE on my desktop without issue. I believe XFCE had the proprietary nVidia drivers installed.

Up until UP4 was released I was running LMDE XFCE x64 without issue. With the UP4 update my XFCE installation became a little messy and I opted for a complete reinstall. I first installed Lisa because I wanted to try out Cinnamon 1.4. Lisa was experiencing same issues with locking up and LMDE Gnome x64 is the same (worth noting Gnome Classic hasn't locked up yet, Gnome and Cinnamon on the other hand have locked up).

If Gnome Classic doesn't cause a lock up I'm happy to remain running it until the XFCE UP4 respin ISOs are released (Kernel 3.2.0-2 refuses to work on my current hardware though wpasupplicant kernel panic (side issue)).

Summary:
nouveau - installed
gnome - freezes
cinnamon - freezes
xfce - no freeze
gnome classic - no freeze
Common ground: 3D requirement of the DEs which freeze against the lack of 3D requirement of the DEs which don't freeze.
Most probable problem: Driver issue? (evidence of such in my second post).

Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the move but I would also like to stress that this happens on Lisa as well.

/var/log/messages entries I believe to show the fault

Also found this which appears to be similar. Note the status: "CLOSED WONTFIX". I assume this means I am wasting my time continuing with nouveau on my current GPU?

EDIT: having done the export /usr/bin/gcc-4.4 trick to install nvidia properitary drivers I am currently running Gnome and waiting to see if there is a freeze. If not then the problem has been confirmed as being a nouveau issue.

Cheers,

Gordon
