Fails to go online - ok last night

I have 3+ computers running from one modem - hard ethernet and wifi iphones. My sons' phones drop out frequently requiring the modem to be restarted - but that does'nt bother me too much.
Last night running fine.
Booted up this morning sitting next to my wife who was happily browsing away.
No go for me - even after several reboots.
My computer seems to recognise the modem but refuses to logon.
I also have LMDE installed on a 16GB flash drive and am running on that now - logged on and working fine. So it is not a hardware problem.
Any ideas out there?

I have a similar problem with one of my laptops.
The Modem is not always recognized, right away.
This is my work-around for that.
If the Modem shows up in Network-Manager great, other wise . . .
I have to log out and boot into a LiveCD of any Mint/Debian OS-distro and 'set-up' a new connection.
Then, I can log out of the LiveCD and Log-in to the installed LMDE.
Usually, works fine after this ... and it does not drop the connection.
The Modem is then, usually 'seen' by the Network-Manager.
Don't ask my why this works, but it does.

Thank you for that. Tried doing it the lazy way first and rebooted into LMDE hdd, deleted the auto eth and set-up another one.
Worked first go. I have done things like that before and fixed problems - I think that the morning caffeine just hadn't kicked in.
All good now, thank you.

Strangely, my install of LXDE did the
exact same thing, this morning!
I'll have to give your solution a go, if I can figure out your instructions.
Fortunately, I had another old install I could rely on, otherwise I wouldn't even be here.

Here's another one
I use a cable connection and i always turn off my modem when i turn off my computer. When I start my computer and the modem synchronises and says everything is fine my network manager can't connect. I have to restart the modem and only then will the network manager connect. I don't know why this happens but it is stupid realy. If i try to let the computer boot and get the LMDE running and ready AND THEN press on my modem the same stupid thing happens.
