Mint 15 - Yes Wifi! LMDE 201303 - No Wifi (Atheros AR9565)

Trying this again. I originally had posted this in the main Mint forum...

Hi, I've been playing various flavors of linux on a new ACER V5-122P-0643. I installed Olivia (Cinnamon) and wifi was just peachy, but the desktop was giving me fits so I decided to try LMDE 201303. I installed the 64-bit .iso from a USB drive (this Acer is a thin client with no optical drive and no ethernet, only wi-fi). Can't even get the wireless driver.

Results of /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py:

Code: Select all
-------------------------
* I. scanning WIFI PCI devices...
  -- Atheros Communications Inc. Device 0036 (rev 01)
      ==> PCI ID = 168c:0036 (rev 01)
-------------------------
* II. querying ndiswrapper...
-------------------------
* III. querying iwconfig...
lo        no wireless extensions.

-------------------------
* IV. querying ifconfig...
lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1

* VI. querying nslookup google.com...
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

So no detail on the wireless card, but it's the Atheros AR9565 based on the lspci -nn output from xubuntu (also installed on the system).

results of lspci -nn:

I tried to manually put the SSID and WPA2-PSK key in /etc/network/interfaces and run sudo ifup wlan0 but got the following:

Code: Select all
wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client 4.2.2

For info, please visit https://www.isc.org/software/dhcp/

Cannot find device "wlan0"
Bind socket to interface: No such device
Failed to bring up wlan0.

Not surprisingly, when I run ifconfig I get only an entry for lo.

Suggestions welcome!

Had the same problem on a Compaq Preserio CQ60 notebook. After many attempts to get the on-board Atheros wireless adapter to function, I plugged a usb wireless adapter into one of the usb ports. LMDE immediately recognized the new adapter and when network password was supplied I was promptly connected to the internet. The one inch adapter protruding from the side of the notebook is a small price to pay for the robust environment that LMDE provides.

I guess you have to install the Atheros firmware, it's in synaptic.
