WIFI firmware installed, but no wlan0?

Post by jiffypop23 »

Hi there. I have LMDE installed on my father's computer and he's been without Internet for a couple months (so no recent updates) and he has this USB wireless card he wants to use. It's a Trendnet TEW424ub, which from what I've read uses the zd1211rw module.

I installed the zd1211-firmware package and added auto wlan0 to /etc/network/interfaces.
When I run ifup wlan0 it says:
Cannot find device "wlan0"
Bind socket to interface: No such device
Failed to bring up wlan0.

ifconfig only shows lo and eth0.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hello jiffypop23,

Here's a page that will give instructions on how to get it working.

Good Luck.
P.S. you may have to uninstall what you've done already.

I was hoping to not have to go down the ndiswrapper route, but I just want to get this working so I guess I'll have to...

I installed the Windows XP driver sis163u (turns out the card I have is a v2, which uses an entirely different chipset than the v3) with ndiswrapper, and it says the hardware is present, but alas there still isn't a wlan0.

ifconfig still only shows lo and eth0.

After rebooting, wlan0 finally decided to show up :D
However the Network Manager said "unmanaged" under wireless, so I edited /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to say managed=true

When I restarted the network-manager service, the computer freezes.
When I boot up with the wireless card plugged in, it freezes to a black screen after the Mint logo (with the loading dots).
Booting up without it plugged in is fine, but once I plug it in Mint crashes. :(

edit: I manually added a wireless connection with the proper information in the network manager, and I saw the list of APs, and right as it was connecting to mine it freezes ;_;

/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf says
managed=false

/etc/network/interfaces has anything wlan0 related commented out.

I took the computer to another house and connected it via the ethernet port and ran a full update.
It doesn't explode when I plug in the wireless card, but it also doesn't light up or show up as wlan0 (again).
ndiswrapper still shows that the driver and device are present however...

edit: turns out I hadn't make && make install'd the ndiswrapper's source. It just crashes when I plug in the card, deja vu.
I think I'm going to throw in the towel on this card and just buy one that will work with a native driver :twisted:
