[Solved] Mobile Broadband Connection Problem

Post by RHTopics »

Anybody having success with mobile broadband?

I tried to get a Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go USB modem ( Novatel MC760) to connect without success when using LMDE as a Live DVD.

Odd because it shows up in Network Manager, allows the setup wizard to run, and tries to make a connection. It gets as far as the connection icon being lit up with the two small green balls, but that is it, no connection is made.

If you click to disconnect it in Network Manager, it displays a message stating it was disconnected.

I have had success with this USB modem in the following distros:

Debian Testing (6.0 Squeeze) using Gnome 32 bit (installed)
Linux Mint 9 Gnome 32 bit (Live CD)
Linux Mint 9 XFCE 32 bit (Live CD)
Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop i386 (Live CD and installed)

Yup, same problem here with a Huawei E170, it detects it, I run the wizard and it starts connecting but then just stays at the looping icon with the lit up peers. Any insight?

Well, it is not the USB Modem that is having the problem while using LMDE as a Live DVD.

I connected to the Internet via Ethernet cable and did a "sudo apt-get install wvdial" to install wvdial. With it installed, I copied over a "wvdial.conf" file that I use on older distros that don't have the latest Network Manager (i.e. Ubuntu 8.04).

From a terminal window did the command "sudo pon.wvdial" and it made the connection. In fact, that is what I am using right now to post this reply.

All you need to do is

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wvdial

and it'll work from there, you can even connect graphically from the tray icon.

It created the wvdial.conf automatically. 8)
As for how do people isntall it, do like I did, find a wireless hotspot and apt-get install it.

I had the same problem with my Optus 169E. I just installed LMDE and upgraded it via my laptop's onboard wireless and when i booted after the upgrade my 169E worked perfectly.

I have the same VM_EVDO modem, and was able to connect with CrunchBang_StadlerAlpha, but not LinuxMint8, even with the additional packages installed. :x

Others, not myself, report similar results with the new Ubuntu...

Here's the only information I can offer:

Some good news, albeit from an older topic...

Both LinuxMint10 and LinuxMintDebian201012 recognise and talk with the Virgin Mobile EVDO modem. The first I have installed on my system, and the other I just tested in the LiveCD environment. :D

Hi!
It could be a problem of the nameservers! At the moment I don't have access to LMDE, so I don't know the name of that file; in other Linux distributions it is: resolv.conf; to see the file:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/resolv.conf
you should see something like:
# Generated by NetworkManager
...
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 1.2.3.5

With the report from MerelyJim that the latest version of LMDE now works "out of the box", I marked this as solved.

Hello,

I am running Mint 10. I am having a problem getting my Samsung Vibrant to be used as a USB Modem. I have tried wvdial, gnome-ppp, and it says please enter password. The plan that I am on does not require a username or password. I have read in many posts that the Broadcom Wireless Chipset does some crazy things with the kernel; I used the Broadcom STA drivers, because the original Broadcom drivers will not keep a connection alive. At one point in the LiveCD I had the mobile working. I did the following: Installed the Broadcom drivers, uninstalled the BC drivers, installed the BC STA drivers, setup my Mobile Broadband connection and voila! It worked! Well, after I did some updates and tested it out it no longer worked anymore. I re-installed Mint 10 did the exact same steps as above and I could not replicate the success this time. Now I am turning to the forums. Thank you for your time.
