Compaq Presario CQ56 WiFi issue

Post by NRI »

Hi everybody!

For a friend, I am trying to set up LMDE on a Compaq Presario CQ56 and can't get the WiFi to work. After countless hours on the Internet and no solution at all, I am asking the community for guidance. It's a 64 bit machine and the result of inxi -F is as follows:

Also, I downloaded the driver from Realtek here: http://www.realtek.com/Downloads/downlo ... Down=false

Strangely enough, the LiveCD of Xubuntu 10.04 works out of the box.

Any guidance/advise will be very much appreciated.

Hi

I have the same problem - did you solve it?

-----------------------------------------------------------

More info for anyone who wants to help(!):

lspci | grep Network
02:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. Device 5390

uname -r
2.6.38-8-generic

there is a hotkey (F12) which turns the light from white (on) to red (off) when pressed but i just cant connect to the internet through the wireless card!

I tried this: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 00178.html and this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1645716

but neither worked (please ask for more details, not sure what people would want)

stuck now and relatively new to linux - my last venture was redhat 3 (I think)!

have already given up on ubuntu studio due to no sound...dont want to go to ubuntu, please help!

Well, after doing some more research, I found that this particular card apparently isn't supported by the Linux kernel. So, my end solution was to wipe everything and install Windows 7 64 bit on it, as much as it pained me.

You could try to purchase a WiFi dongle, which can be fairly small, and use that. Most of them are either supported right out of the box or have a Linux driver included. This was a solution that didn't work for my friend, though. :(

Here is how I got this working on the Presario CQ56. I am using the Wifi on it right now to post this. This is on Linux Mint Debian Edition

go here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/dow ... Down=false
download the second file in the list. RTL8191SE-VA2, You will have to select the linux driver on the second page depending on your kernel verison etc.

extract the file
Change to the driver directory
sudo su
make
make install
reboot

:)
