Will LMDE + BCM4322 provide wireless connect?[solved]

Post by este.el.paz »

Folks:

Basically very new to LM, took some doing to get LMDE bootable in my MBPro which I finally achieved last weekend; and first off the network lists the wireless as not available due to "missing firmware." I read through a search here looking for solutions to the wireless issues and there seem to be a range of answers, from "LMDE doesn't do wireless" to this seemingly easy looking solution: http://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211 . . . however this machine is using the BCM4322 card, but that number isn't mentioned in the wiki . . . . Would this wiki still apply to fixing the wireless issues or would it require the seemingly more complicated suggestions that were also found recommending the use of "ndiswrapper"?? I also saw a post where someone posted with the comment, "this is not the 'missing firmware' syndrome," and then it didn't seem like there was any further comment on that "syndrome" so I couldn't tell if this data from the wiki.debian/brcm80211 would handle the "missing firmware" problem or not. I don't have much in the way of command line knowledge, so simple solutions are the preferred direction; but before diving into it I'm just wondering whether LMDE will provide wireless at all, because I found posts from not too long ago saying that it wouldn't . . . . Insights are appreciated.

Hi!

Check out this tutorial!
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... =lmde+4322

The wiki you found is not the best page for your card. Here is one that has some info on the 4322:
http://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx
On this page you find more info on the bcm4322 and it shows you how you can test it!
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri ... own_issues

That's about it. I'm not a wifi driver install kind of a person.

@dagon:

Tried to post this yesterday morning but the LM server must have been overwhelmed and I couldn't get into the forum. I spent some time going through the various links you provided, so I first wanted to say "thanks" for taking the time to do that. On reading the different posts however it remains unclear as to whether the BCM4322 is "supported" or not; it looks like there might be a process to getting this done as the different posts provide some conflicting evidence(s). The tutorial given by xxdawg was from a year or so ago and then down in the bowels of that thread was a couple of posts from "shoeless hunter" saying that the method provided in the tutorial didn't allow him to have both wireless and ethernet working . . . . And, other posts that I previously found were saying to not do the "broadcom-sta" install method . . . . Then one of the other links to the "wireless.kernel.org" page show that only two cards are not supported, one of them happening to be the BCM4322 . . . and then another page is showing that the "b43" driver will work . . . . So, the waters are thoroughly muddied at this point, I'll have to carefully read through all of the different threads to try to learn and understand which method might be the best . . . meaning that wireless would work, without disabling ethernet or any other vital functions . . . . I'm hoping for a butt simple solution . . . it's pretty basic to need wireless, and this is a 1.75 year old computer . . . . I'm pasting some of the data's that showed up in response to some Terminal queries much of which I don't understand like the second one--it looks like some drivers are loaded, but it says "firmware missing" and then the last command 14e4 actually shows, not the 4322 but 432b--which now perhaps might be on the supported list. . . . . I also have copied some other stuff from the various links from dagon that show the different conflicting info on whether this driver is supported or not, which I could post into another post . . . .

14e4:432b partially in 2.6.39+ BCM4322 a/b/g/n N (r4) wl
Checking out the "wireless.kernel.org" page for the "432b" card shows that wireless can be alternatively used by "wl" ??? . . . which I guess is a driver??? but that "wl" driver didn't seem to show up in the "grep" list query . . . is that what I might want to try to install?

@dawgdocs tutorial is dated Oct 2010. It refers to a Debian wiki which was last updated 2012-02-12 and in the list of supported devices we now find an entry that reads:
PCI: 14E4:432B Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
So one way or the other it should be doable.

@dagon: OK, that's good news. The debian wiki wants to see "# Debian Wheezy (testing)
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free" in the sources list. Are any of these looking like it's got that line or do I specifically need to add that exact line to begin this process?? And then what am I doing?? is it "sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" to get the sources list edited and adding that specific line?
$ sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list
[sudo] password for:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

There's two tables there. One for Squeeze (stable) and one for Wheezy. Your card is on both.
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
I'm not on LMDE but I think the sources you've got could cover your needs this time. Try and install the package you desire and apt-get will tell you if it can't find it.

Edit: One more thing. This line: "sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" will start gedit with administrator rights but you might notice that the terminal reports errors. When you start a graphic program from the terminal as an admin you use the "gksudo" command. I don't know why, that's just the way it is.

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
[/i]

Just found the time to run the suggested commands, very simple, as suggested for the Wheezy system using "aptitude update" and then "aptitude install module-assistant" and then following therest of the 6 commands . . . the "iwconfig" didn't seem to show much when I was still connected by ethernet, or even after I disconnected it, but when I clicked on the "network" tab in the toolbar the local wireless networks were showing up and it asked for the key . . . and . . . I'm typing this post using the wireless connection!!!! Hopefully the post by "shoeless hunter" from a year ago about not having ethernet will not be a problem now . . . I'll have to check it later, but . . . as of this moment wireless using "wl"?? is working, thanks for your help--I like the simple solution.

I have the same card "PCI: 14E4:432B Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller"
After the procedure(wl), networkmanager say: "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", but is not. If i play with the switch I can disable wireless and Bluetooth light...
My laptop : Dell Vostro 1720

Code: Select all

 lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\|wl"
wl 2402522 0
lib80211 12950 2 lib80211_crypt_tkip,wl

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:144 Mb/s Tx-Power:off
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Managementmode:All packets received
Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=-23 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Anyone know how to bypass the switch validation?

I have fix my problem "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". I need to block dell-laptop
Procedure:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
add line: blacklist dell-laptop
restart computer and now wireless is enable.

My new problem, I receive an IP address, but i can't ping my wireless router. If I'm wired, everything working fine.

Code: Select all
