Samba broken

Postby c-m on Fri Apr 20, 2012 4:57 am

Samba has stopped working on my system, and smb.conf appears to be missing from /etc/samba/smb.conf

I've tried to reinstall samba via apt, but I get the following error:

It's likely to be crappy vmware, not Samba, see: viewtopic.php?f=189&t=98908

So Vmware has made it so that my samba server no longer works? It has been working fine for months with VM installed.

Or did you mean just that error is likely to be vmware.

I'm not concerned about the error. I just want samba to work and for devices to be discoverable.

As i said, it doesn't seem that there is even an smb.conf in /etc/samba/

The current release of the vmware installer is known to break initscripts so that packages that use such feature (like samba) can't complete the installation.
If you are using vmware player 4 (or workstation 8) you should uninstall it first:
Code: Select all
sudo vmware-installer -u vmware-player

then fix the samba installation:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install

This should make samba work.
Finally you may want to reinstall vmware.
