limit network data volume?

Postby Zweitaktmotor on Sat Jan 04, 2014 4:25 pm

Hi,

I am trying to set up a laptop with LMDE that should be able to access the Internet via a mobile connection (SIM card reader).

Most monthly plans will give you an inclusive data allowance. However, once you go over the limit, they start charging you per MB and if you're not careful, you can rack up unexpectedly high bills.

I am looking for a way to prevent this from happening, perhaps a small application that can monitor your your network traffic, issue a warning when a certain limit is reached or even shut the mobile Internet connection down. Every month at a given date (the payment date), the counter should be reset so that you can work within your allowance again. Past activity logs would be a bonus but not a necessity.

Does such an application exist? Would it make sense for someone to look into it?

Looking forward to your views and opinions.
