bad 720p playback performance, apalling flash performance

Postby dbum on Sun May 06, 2012 10:22 am

Hello guys,

I'm very new here and in fact coming from (K)ubuntu. I have got a notebook with a 1,3ghz SU7300 core2duo, 4gigs of RAM and an Intel GMA 4500MHD and have gone for LMDE12 32bit.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble with the video playback performance.. On Ubuntu I had no trouble whatsoever playing back 720p videos on both Youtube and VLC. On LMDE it is impossible to watch a 720p Youtube video. It runs with less than 5FPS. Watching a 720p video on VLC is possible and runs smooth, but any action on the X server (minimizing a window, switching to another window, or loading a webpage in the background) makes the playback stumble.

I tried using the nonfree flash player instead of the one that came with Mint. No luck.
I feel that Ubuntu utilized my graphics card to render videos, even youtube, thus making the playback rock-stable, and LMDE doesn't.

I'm quite bummed because I've absolutely fallen in love with the Cinnamon Desktop.. is there a way to check about the hardware acceleration or the graphic card driver? Any hint is appreciated.

Best regards
Daniel

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you still have ubuntu installed check:
xorg.conf and the xserver-xorg-video-intel version
kernel version , uname -a
also check if you have KMS enabled.
Might try a ubuntu livecd and see what settings it uses.

Then check all of the above against the same things on your LMDE install. I am guessing either the video driver is a different version of the settings in Ubuntu's xorg.conf are different.

Thank you so much for your help.

Unfortunately I don't have Ubuntu installed anymore but I found a completely different cure. Apparently the default Kernel that comes with the 32bit version doesn't support SMP, so only one if my CPUs was used. Installing the 686 PAE Kernel enlivened my second CPU and gave me the exact Flash and 720p performance I had in Ubuntu.

I was 100% sure this is a gfx acceleration issue. I never thought a second CPU core makes that much of a difference concerning video playback.
