I have recent bought a genius hs-03u usb headet to use with a ipsiron 1501 (lmde, with cinnamon and mate)
now i get through both headphone jack and onboard speakers
however I have no option to use them in the sound settings when i plug them in
I run lsusb

In Volume Control can you choose ALSA Mixer as device?
Maybe you have to go to Preferences in same window and "Select mixers to be visible".
