Video slowed to 15FPS after upgrading LMDE #6 to LMDE #7

Hello!

I just upgraded Linux mint Debian edition from update pack #6 to update pack #7. After the update video playback slowed to about 15FPS when run in full screen on 24" external monitor. When I scale the same video window to about 720p size, it plays smoothly on any monitor. My CPU load is at about 40% load during full hd video playback in full screen, 24". The source resolution of the video file does not seem to have nearly as much effect as the resolution to which it is scaled for playback. I can play 480p video on my 24" monitor in full screen and it will still drop frames (estimate to about 18FPS). VLC shows no dropped frames even when clearly the video stutters when scaled up to full screen.

This got introduced right after upgrading to LMDE update pack #7. In update pack #6 videos play smoothly also in full-screen, 24" monitor (scaled to 1920x1200). Linux mint 15 cinnamon plays the videos about the same as update pack #7.

My system is a MacBook 4,1: Core 2 duo 2,4GHz with Intel GMA X3100 graphics (GM965 chipset). Here are some more details:
LMDE #6: Graphics driver: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2: 2.19.0-6, kernel: 3.2.0-4-amd64 - smooth playback
LMDE #7: Graphics driver: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2: 2.21.14-4, kernel: 3.10.2-amd64 - 15FPS full-screen
Mint 15 Olivia: Graphics driver: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2: 2.21.6 (I think), kernel: 3.8.0-generic - 15FPS full-screen

What can I do to make video playback smooth again?
I have currently just one idea, to downgrade the graphics driver to 2.19.0-6, and don't know how to do that at the moment.

I've been using Linux mint 15 for about a month (first time using Linux as the primary OS), now looking to switch full-time to LMDE which I have on a separate partition. I would like to use the latest system updates instead of keeping LMDE at #6.

Thanks for any help !

EDIT: Just tried KDE in LMDE #7 via the mint software center. in KDE the video playback is smooth, so I suppose downgrading the intel video drivers wouldn't solve this issue. I've been using cinnamon exclusively up to this point. Would still like to use cinnamon with video playback working properly.

P.S. Here are some more details from the LMDE update pack #7 installation:
